In-situ slings, also known as stay-in-place slings, are designed to be left under the resident when seated in a chair or resting in bed between hoisting transfers. This removes the need to reposition the sling before each hoist, reducing handling time and discomfort for residents who are moved frequently throughout the day.
When in-situ slings are appropriate
- Residents who require multiple daily hoist transfers
- Residents for whom sling fitting is uncomfortable or distressing
- High-dependency nursing care settings where speed and efficiency is essential
Key considerations
- Pressure risk — in-situ slings carry a higher pressure injury risk than standard slings. They must be combined with an appropriate pressure assessment and regular repositioning
- Padding — always recommended for in-situ use; reduces the risk of pressure damage from the sling material
- Inspection — slings left in-situ must be inspected before each use in line with LOLER requirements
In-situ use should be agreed with a moving and handling advisor or occupational therapist. Call 03452 999 999 for guidance.
