Getting the right side rail configuration is an important part of any care home bed setup. Side rails provide a gripping point for repositioning, prevent unintentional bed exit, and give care staff a safety reference point during manual handling.

Side rail types

Full-length rails — run the full length of the bed; maximum protection; high dependency residents

Half rails — cover the upper half; allow egress from the lower half; balance safety and independence

Quarter rails / grab rails — short rail at the head end only; grip point without restricting bed exit
