Toileting slings have an open or split-leg base design that allows the resident to remain in the sling during continence care and toilet use, without staff needing to remove and refit the sling. This significantly reduces transfer time and the associated manual handling load during personal care.

When to choose a toileting sling

  • Resident requires hoisting to and from the toilet
  • Continence care takes place whilst the resident is suspended or partially lowered
  • Resident is not able to bear weight to allow sling repositioning between transfer and personal care

Key specification points

  • Open base vs split leg — both allow toilet access; split-leg provides more postural stability; open base allows easier fitting for non-ambulant residents
  • Padded leg supports — recommended for comfort in residents with thin or fragile skin
  • Head support — available on selected models for residents with limited trunk control

Note: toileting slings do not provide the same level of postural support as a universal sling. They should only be used for toileting transfers — not as a general-purpose transfer sling.
