Bariatric patient hoists are designed for residents where a standard hoist would exceed its safe working load. Selecting the correct bariatric hoist is a legal requirement under LOLER — the equipment must be rated above the resident's actual weight with an appropriate safety margin. Stand aids — also known as standing aids, stand-and-raise hoists or standing hoists — support residents with some weight-bearing ability to stand safely from a seated position. They are widely used in care homes for bed to chair transfers, toileting and personal care, significantly reducing manual handling risk for care staff.

Transfer aids are the everyday manual handling equipment care home staff rely on for safe resident transfers without a hoist.
